Panthers Conclude Regular Season Next Weekend
CHESTNUT HILL, MASS., -- The University of Pittsburgh tennis team was edged, 5-2, by No. 41 Boston College Sunday evening at the Rec Plex.
With the loss, the Panthers drop to 4-15 on the year and 0-12 against ACC foes. Boston College improves to 15-7 and 5-7 in conference play.
"We are definitely moving in the right direction," said head coach Alex Santos. "I'm extremely proud of Camila [Moreno], Clara [Lucas] and Luisa [Varon] because they played tough, aggressive tennis throughout the entire match. We are closer and closer against the top teams, and we will be ambitious and give that extra step."
The Panthers battled in doubles, but it wouldn't be enough as the Eagles clinched the point. Boston College captured the first win on court three, 6-0, before the Pitt tandem of senior Clara Lucas and sophomore Camila Moreno evened out the matches with a 6-3 win on court two. Senior Gabriela Rezende and sophomore Claudia Bartolome came close to winning the point for the Panthers, but came up short, falling 6-7 on court one.
Moving to singles, Boston College turned in the first win on court three to lead 2-0.
Back-to-back Pitt wins would quickly tie the team race, 2-2. Moreno first turned in a 6-4, 6-3 win on court four before senior Luisa Varon outlasted Kylie Wilcox in three sets on court one. Varon claimed the first set, 6-4, dropped the second, 4-6, and bounced back to win the third, 7-5.
The Panthers would be unable to win any other singles matches, bringing the final team score to 5-2 in favor of Boston College.
Pitt concludes the regular season with a pair of road matches, first at Clemson Friday, April 12 and will finish at Wake Forest Sunday, April 14.
