Pitt Falls to WVU
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team dropped a 9-4 decision to rival West Virginia Tuesday evening, as the two teams took to the field at PNC Park for the first time in the rivalry's history.
"This was a great venue for our team," said head coach Mike Bell. "What a great opportunity provided by the Pirates, and we really look forward to continuing this down the road. At the start of the game, we've always preached and talked about pitching and defense and [Nick] Snyder has done a great job for them all year and he was outstanding again today. He held us in check there early on and their offense did a great job. They can drive the ball far, they can hurt you in speed game, and they kind of did a little bit of both there. They drove some balls and used their speed."
The Panthers captured the first lead of the game in the bottom of the second with a deep shot to left field off the bat of Nico Popa, putting Pitt up 1-0.
"It was pretty cool," Popa said. "I definitely grew up coming to Pirates games, so to be able to play here tonight was pretty awesome. I used to come with my mom and dad when I was probably around six years old and we would sit in left field. I never really thought I was ever going to play here, so getting the opportunity to do so tonight was pretty cool."
West Virginia would score three in the third, extending its advantage with a two-run fifth. A single run in the sixth and three in the seventh made it 9-1 in favor of the Mountaineers.
Pitt would cut into the deficit in the eighth as Cole MacLaren belted a three-run homer, making it 9-4, but the Panthers were unable to complete the comeback.
Chris Cappas (3-4) earned the loss, going 4.0 innings, allowing three runs off five hits and one walk, striking out three. Chris Gomez, Brady Devereux, Chase Smith and Mason Ronan all saw work out of the pen.
MacLaren's three-RBI performance led the way, as Pitt tallied four hits and four walks in the outing.
The Panthers conclude the regular season at No. 6 Georgia Tech, taking on the Yellow Jackets Thursday through Saturday in Atlanta.
