Both Offenses Quiet in Pitchers’ Duel
ATLANTA – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team was edged in a pitching duel Friday evening at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta, as No. 7 Georgia Tech captured 2-0 decision in game two.
The home team struck first, taking the lead in the opening frame after an RBI double. The Yellow Jackets would extend it in the third as a balk allowed the runner at third to score, giving Georgia Tech a 2-0 lead.
Both offenses would quiet as the early runs were the only of the game.
Junior Dan Hammer (3-8) put together a quality start in his final appearance of the season, going 6.0 innings, allowing two runs off five hits, only one of which was extra bases, striking out five. Chase Smith dominated the Yellow Jackets in the final two frames, retiring all six batters he faced, five via strikeout.
Nico Popa extended his hit streak to six and reached base mark to 31 straight, while Cole MacLaren also tallied a knock in the outing.
The Panthers' season will come to an end tomorrow, as the series with the Yellow Jackets wraps up at 1 p.m. from Russ Chandler Stadium.
