Cappas Earns Third Win in Seven Strikeout Performance
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team took part in the first of a four-game homestand Tuesday afternoon, defeating Western Michigan by a score of 14-3 at Charles L. Cost Field.
"I was really pleased with the offensive production up and down the lineup," said head coach Mike Bell. "We continuously strung together quality at bats, taking advantage of what was given to us. Connor [Perry] had an outstanding day, David [Yanni] continued to drive runners in when he's had men in the scoring position, and the pitching and defense was solid, as we saw in the early part of the game with [Chris] Cappas giving us another quality start. We have a tough stretch over the next seven games, but we are looking forward to the challenges that are ahead of us."
Pitt got on the board first, plating a run in the opening frame after Connor Perry launched his first of two homers in the game over the wall in right field.
Western Michigan would knot it up in the fourth on a solo homer of their own, making it a 1-1 ballgame. The Panthers responded in the bottom of the inning, regaining the advantage on a ground ball out off the bat of Bryce O'Farrell.
The Broncos again tied things up, as an error allowed an extra baserunner, who would come around to score on a fielder's choice.
The Panthers kept the offense going, scoring a pair in the fifth to take a two-run lead. A one-out walk to Sky Duff got things going, as the leadoff man would steal second before Cole MacLaren joined him on the base paths after a free pass of his own. Perry would be struck by a pitch to load things up with just one out, forcing a pitching change.
Nico Popa would take a pitch off the elbow to plate the go ahead run before a single into right by David Yanni made it 4-2 in favor of the Panthers.
The Panthers hot bats kept going in the sixth, plating four to extend the advantage. Walks to Zach Klapak and Duff and a single from Gregory Ryan Jr. loaded things up with one out before a sacrifice fly by MacLaren plated the first run of the frame. Perry would continue his tear, ripping a three-run homer to right field, his 15th of the season, giving Pitt an 8-2 lead.
Things kept going Pitt's way in the seventh as two more came across and the Panthers. Yanni would lead off the inning with a single through the right side, moving to second on a walk to O'Farrell. Kyle Hess would bring Yanni around on a single through the right side, as a single from Klapak pated O'Farrell, making it 10-2 in favor of the Panthers.
The eighth inning saw four more score for Pitt, as the Panthers secured the double-digit advantage. A single into center from Perry got things going, as a double into the right field corner from Yanni put two runners in scoring position with no outs. An error in the infield would allow O'Farrell to reach, scoring pinch runner JC Mendez. A single through the right side from Luca Lotito kept things going, scoring Yanni and forcing a Western Michigan pitching change.
With the bases loaded, a fielder's choice off the bat of Andres Antonini scored O'Farrell as Pitt secured the 14-3 victory.
Chris Cappas (3-3) threw a solid five-inning start, allowing one earned run off two hits and three walks, striking out seven. William Kirwan threw one inning of relief, letting up one hit and two walks, striking out one. Freshman Mason Ronan tossed one frame, letting up an unearned run off two hits, fanning two. Brady Devereux closed things out, allowing one hit and striking out one.
Offensively, Perry continued to dominate, going 3-4 with four RBI and four runs scored. Yanni wrapped up the evening 3-5 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored as Pitt tallied 10 hits in the contest.
The Panthers will close out the home portion of the 2019 season this weekend, hosting nationally-ranked North Carolina for a three-game set. Action will get underway Friday at 6 p.m., with game two set for Saturday at 3 p.m. and the series finale to follow Sunday at 1 p.m.
