Panthers Drop ACC Opener To #2 NC State

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's basketball team (8-3, 0-1 ACC) fell to #2 NC State Friday night in the ACC opener for both squads. The Wolfpack collected the 89-54 victory at the Petersen Events Center as they improved to 9-1 overall.
The Wolfpack opened the game with the first five points before Jayla Everett started things for Pitt with a deep triple. After two more NC State triples, Mary Dunn came off the bench and finished off a layup to make it 11-7 in favor of the visitors at the first media timeout. Everett knocked down her second triple of the opening quarter with just over a minute left in the first but the Wolfpack responded with a half court buzzer beater to end the quarter with the 22-10 lead.
The Wolfpack came out quick in the second quarter as they netted the first eight points to force Pitt into a timeout with the 30-10 lead. After a pair of free throws from Destiny Strother and Amber Brown cut the Pitt deficit to 16, 32-16, NC State responded with back-to-back triples to regain the 38-16 lead with just under four minutes to go in the half. Everett netted five points down the stretch of the half as the Wolfpack went to the locker room with the 42-23 lead.
NC State continued to extend their lead in the third after Brown opened the scoring with the layup. The Wolfpack netted the next 10 points to push their lead to 27, 52-25. Liatu King finished the scoring in the third with a pair of free throws as the Wolfpack were able to finish a layup at the buzzer to take the 66-33 lead into the fourth.
Maliyah Johnson had a strong fourth quarter for the Panthers as she opened things up with a jumper and netted another jumper later on. The Wolfpack continued to hit from deep in the fourth as they netted three more triples to extend their lead. Strother and Tracey Hueston took over the scoring over the final three minutes for Pitt as they dropped the ACC opener 89-54.
Everett finished off her night with 13 points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks across 25 minutes while Strother came off the bench and netted 10 points, four rebounds and two blocks in 18 minutes. Brown had six points, six rebounds and two assists while off the bench, Hueston netted six points and two boards.
As a team, the Wolfpack shot 42.5% from the floor while Pitt connected on 31.1% of their attempts on the night. NC State won the rebounding battle 51-37 while the Panthers turned 10 offensive boards into 19 second chance points in the loss.
NC State was led offensively by Raina Perez who netted 15 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals while Camille Hobby finished with 15 points and seven boards off the bench in the win.
