
Pitt Falls To #14 Maryland Sunday, 87-63

FORT MYERS, FL – The Pitt women's basketball team (5-2, 0-0 ACC) dropped their second straight game Sunday afternoon to #14 Maryland, 87-63.
The Panthers had a strong start to the game as Maliyah Johnson netted a triple and Liatu King knocked down a mid-range jumper to give Pitt the 5-2 lead two minutes in. The Terrapins responded with nine straight to take the 11-5 lead before Channise Lewis netted back-to-back jumpers to cut the Pitt deficit to two, 11-9. Maryland responded with six straight before Gabby Hutcherson finished a contested leaner in the lane to make it 17-11 in favor of the Terrapins at the end of the first quarter.
Maryland opened the second quarter with two straight buckets but Pitt fought back with seven straight as Amber Brown made a layup and Avery Strickland netted her first of two triples in the quarter to make it 21-18 in favor of the Terrapins. The two squads exchanged buckets in the middle part of the quarter before Strickland knocked down another triple to make it a three-point game, 29-26, just over two minutes to play in the half. Maryland was able to score four straight points to take the 33-26 lead into the locker room.
Pitt was able to cut the Maryland lead to six, 37-31, after Johnson netted a deep triple and King finished off a contested layup in the lane. Another Johnson triple got Pitt within 42-35 before the media timeout but the Terrapins knocked down back-to-back threes to take the 48-35 lead into the timeout. Out of the media, the Terrapins caught fire from three as they pushed their lead out to 69-47 through three quarters.
Maryland opened up the final quarter with a 9-2 run before Emy Hayford finished a fast break layup and Aislin Malcolm netted a corner triple to make it 78-54 in favor of the Terrapins. The two teams exchanged scores down the stretch as Lewis closed out the scoring for Pitt with a triple as Maryland earned the 87-63 victory.
Johnson led the Panthers with 11 points and five rebounds while Lewis finished off her afternoon with nine points and five assists in the loss. King finished with eight points and four rebounds while Hayford made her second straight start and finished with five points and four assists.
As a team, Pitt was out-rebounded 43-37 for the game while the Terrapins shot 43.9% from the floor in the win. Maryland turned 18 Pitt turnovers into 22 points while Pitt only scored five points off of Maryland's 14 turnovers.
