Panthers Fall in Non-Conference Finale

PITTSBURGH – Pitt (7-7, 0-1 ACC) dropped an 84-69 decision to Duquesne (7-5, 0-1 A-10) in their final non-conference contest Sunday afternoon at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A back and forth first quarter resulted in a 25-19 advantage for the Dukes after 10 minutes of play despite the Panthers shooting 50% from the field on 8-of-16 shooting. Mikayla Johnson had nine points in the quarter to lead the Panthers. Duquesne used a 15-4 run in the second frame to build their lead before Pitt closed the gap to 20 at the half, 49-29.
The Panthers scored 19 points in the third quarter, with 10 coming from the free throw line. Lauren Rust added four points in the frame. Pitt pushed in the fourth, outscoring Duquesne 21-17, but they were unable to overcome the deficit.
Johnson finished with a season-high 23 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block while playing all 40 minutes. Theresa Hagans Jr. chipped in 14 points along with five rebounds, a team-high four assists, and a game-high three steals. Amiya Jenkins tied her season-high of 11 points off the bench.
