PITTSBURGH - Pitt outhit NC State on Saturday but fell in game two of the series, 6-4.
The Panthers have combined for double-digit hits in 12 of their 22 games this season. They sprayed 13 hits around the ballpark in game two on Saturday afternoon.
Luke Cantwell had the first four-hit game of his career on Saturday, going 4-5 with three RBIs and a double. He is hitting .435 with 37 hits, 22 runs scored and 12 doubles this season. Lorenzo Carrier had another multiple-hit game as he had two hits, an RBI and a walk. Ryan Zuckerman and Sebastian Pisacreta each had two hits as well. Zuckerman has reached base safely in 26-consecutive games dating back to last season.
AJ Nessler, Jayden Melendez and David Pedanou each had hits today as well as the Panthers outhit the Wolfpack 13-9.
In Ryan Reed's sixth start of the season, he went six innings and allowed just two earned runs. Kyle Demi threw three innings in relief and allowed one unearned run on one hit while he struck out a trio of batters.
The Panthers loaded the bases in both the second and third innings but were unable to convert on either of their opportunities early. Pitt strung together five hits in those two innings.
NC State jumped out to a three-run lead in the middle frame with two runs in the third inning and one run in the fourth inning.
Pitt cut into the NC State lead in the bottom of the fourth, responding with a pair of runs to make it a 3-2 ballgame Caden Dulin and David Pedanou each worked full count walks to put themselves on. With two outs, Luke Cantwell shot a two-run double into the left-centerfield gap and the Panthers trailed by one.
The Wolfpack scored two in the next half inning to maintain their three-run lead. They led 5-2 after five.
Luke Cantwell delivered once again when he drove in his third run of the day on his third hit of the day. Lorenzo Carrier had an RBI single as well, minimizing NC State's lead to just one again. Sebastian Pisacreta lead off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double down the left field line and would move up to third on David Pedanou's single to center. Pedanou stole second and the Panthers now had two runners in scoring position for Pitt's leadoff man, Luke Cantwell. Cantwell shot an RBI single through the right side that scored Pisacreta. With Pedanou now at third, Lorenzo Carrier would drive him in to make it a one-run ballgame. Pitt trailed 5-4 after six.
NC State added one more run in the top of the seventh and would go on to win, 6-4.
The Panthers would not go down quietly. They loaded the bases for the third time on the afternoon in the bottom of the eighth inning. Cantwell collected his fourth hit of the day as he legged out an infield single to second. It looked like Jayden Melendez had hit a towering game-tying home run with two outs but his ball would hit off the top of the leftfield wall due to powerful wind gusts that were blowing in all day. He settled at first and Cantwell advanced to third. Carrier worked a full count walk which loaded the bases with two gone in the eighth. AJ Nessler grounded out to first which ended the threat.
