PITTSBURGH – Behind a ninth minute header from junior midfielder Santiago Ferreira, the seventh-ranked Pitt men's soccer team knocked off Quinnipiac, 1-0, to open the 2025 campaign Thursday evening at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
With the victory, the Panthers (1-0-0, 0-0-0 ACC) improved to 5-0-1 in season-openers over the past six seasons, while improving to 2-0-0 all-time against Quinnipiac (0-1-0, 0-0-0 MAAC).
Pitt, playing without reigning ACC Defensive Player of the Year Casper Svendby, came out aggressive offensively – attempting four shots over the first seven minutes of action.
Undaunted, the Panthers' breakthrough came at the 8:28 mark as freshman defender Gavin Wetzel played a through ball to junior defender Josh Hardin – who took a touch and sent a cross from the right wing into the box. Ferreira, a native of Cali, Colombia, made a well-timed run – ending up on the receiving end of Hardin's cross and headed home his second-career goal to give Pitt a 1-0 lead.
Despite the Bobcats' defensive-minded approach, the Panthers used a blend of progression and possession to dominate much of the remainder of the contest on the ball, ultimately holding on for the 1-0 victory.
As a unit, Pitt finished the match with an 11-5 advantage in shots, while controlling possession 62 percent. Defensively, the Panthers allowed just two shots on goal as junior keeper Jack Moxom improved to 5-1-0 for his career as a starter.
