The result marked Pitt's (3-3-0, 0-2-0 ACC) first home loss of the season and its first 0-2 start in ACC play since 2018.
Notre Dame (2-1-2, 1-0-0 ACC) struck early as Luke Burton finished off a pass from Nolan Spicer in the 14th minute. The Panthers regrouped and created several quality chances before halftime but went into the break trailing, 1-0.
Pitt's best opportunity of the first period came in the 45th minute, when junior midfielder Santiago Ferreira and junior forward Anders Bordoy executed a well-timed give-and-go but Bordoy's shot sailed just off target.
Pitt continued to control play in the second half, but Spicer notched his second assist of the night in the 67th minute, setting up Wyatt Borso to double the Irish lead.
The Panthers finished with a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks but were unable to capitalize, with several late attempts blocked in the box.
Individually, seven Panthers attempted a shot, with freshman midfielder Grayson Carter and junior forward Albert Thorsen accounting for the team's two on target. Goalkeeper Jack Moxom recorded two saves.
Of note, Friday marked the Panthers' second consecutive match controlling possession by 70 percent or more.
Match Notes
- Miguel Bertran earned his first start of the season.
- The Panthers were shut out for the second time this year.
