COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Playing shorthanded due to injuries, the Pitt men's soccer team fell to Maryland, 2-1, Friday night at Ludwig Field.
The loss was Pitt's (3-4-1, 0-2-0 ACC) third straight on the road and its third defeat in the past four matches.
The first half featured chances on both ends but no breakthrough. Pitt generated four shots, including early looks from freshman defender Gavin Wetzel and senior defender Jackson Gilman, while junior goalkeeper Jack Moxom made three saves to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime.
After the break, the Terps (5-0-1, 1-0-0 B1G) wasted little time grabbing control. In the 49th minute, Stephane Njike finished a cross from Sadam Masereka, with Leon Koehl also earning credit for the assist, to open the scoring.
Masereka doubled the lead in the 82nd minute, taking a pass from Kenny Quist-Therson and slotting it past Moxom for a 2-0 advantage.
The Panthers pulled one back late as freshman midfielder Jakob Löpping netted his first career goal in the 88th minute off an assist from junior forward Anders Bordoy, but Maryland held firm to secure the victory.
The Terps controlled much of the match, holding a 19-8 edge in shots and a 57-43 advantage in possession. Moxom finished with four saves for Pitt, while Laurin Mack recorded four stops for Maryland.
