PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's soccer team fell to Miami, 1-0, Saturday evening at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The Panthers seemed to have netted an equalizer twice in the second half, but both were overturned after video review.
The first 20 minutes of the opening stanza went back-and-forth with teams controlling possession.
Miami (8-3-1, 3-2 ACC) got on the board first in the 43rd minute when they were awarded a free kick near the corner spot. The Hurricanes sent the ball across the goal, and it was deflected past Elli Johnson to the far corner for the first score of the game. Miami went into the break with a 1-0 lead.
After the half, the Panthers looked like they netted the equalizer in the 50th minute on an olympico from Maci Tew. After a VAR review, the goal was overturned for a foul in the box.
The Panthers (6-5-1, 0-4-1 ACC) outshot the Hurricanes 11-6 in the game taking seven chances at goal in the second half.
Pitt controlled possession in the second frame, searching for the equalizing goal.
As time wound down, the Panthers earned a corner kick in the 86th minute and sent goalie Elli Johnson into the opposing 18-yard box. The cross came in and a scramble in the box ended with the ball at Johnson's feet. She slotted the ball into the back of the net, but a VAR review ruled the goal offsides.
