Panthers Maul No. 12 Mountaineers in Morgantown, 23-1

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Pitt Panthers (25-14) run-ruled No. 12 West Virginia (27-10), 23-1, in seven innings in the Backyard Brawl on Tuesday night.
Pitt's 23 runs were their second-most against West Virginia, and the second-most in the history of the Backyard Brawl. The 22-run margin of victory was their largest in the Backyard Brawl.
It was Pitt's first win at West Virginia since 2016. They have now won each of the last two meetings.
With the Panthers' five homers on Tuesday, they set the single-season program record for home runs. Pitt has now slugged 82 home runs this year, besting the previous mark of 79 set in 2022.
Sebastian Pisacreta hit two home runs and drove in a career-high five runs in the victory. Pisacreta finished the day 2-for-4 with four runs scored and a walk. Leadoff man AJ Nessler also drove in five runs for the Panthers, going 2-for-5 with a three-run home run and a two-run double. Caden Dulin hit a three-run home run in the third inning, eclipsing the double-digit home run mark for the first time in his career.
Lorenzo Carrier went 2-for-3 with two walks and a solo home run in the top of the first inning. Trey Fenderson drove in three runs on his double in the top of the fifth. Julian Irizarry got the start in left field and went 2-for-2 with an RBI and three runs scored. Carter Dierdorf worked two walks and scored also scored three runs.
The Panthers pitched by committee on Tuesday and allowed just one run on two hits. David Leslie gave the Panthers a quality start, throwing 1.2 scoreless innings with one strikeout. Joey Ciancimino, Freddy Beruvides Jr. and Michael Savarese threw the finale three innings and each struck out two while not allowing a single base runner.
Lorenzo Carrier got Pitt's offense rolling with a solo home run in the top of the first inning.
Sebastian Pisacreta and AJ Nessler followed suit with home runs of their own in the second inning as Pitt scored seven runs in the top of the second. Pisacreta hit a solo home run while Nessler launched a three-run shot. Joey Baran worked a bases loaded walk to make it a six-run ballgame. With the bases still loaded, Kai Wagner and Trey Fenderson both scored on a wild pitch to put the Panthers up 8-0.
Pitt backed up their seven-run second with an eight-spot in the top of the third inning. Carter Dierdorf and Julian Irizarry led off the inning with a walk and single, respectively, and each moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Caden Dulin drove both in on a three-run blast to left on his 10th home run of the season. After loading the bases on three-consecutive walks, Sebastian Pisacreta and Carter Dierdorf were each hit by pitches and Julian Irizarry worked a walk to add three more runs. AJ Nessler capped the inning off with a two-run double to left center and the Panthers led 16-0 through three.
A pair of walks put two more runners on in the top of the fourth inning for Sebastian Pisacreta to slug his second home run of the day and extended the Panthers lead to nineteen. The Mountaineers got a run in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 19-1 ballgame.
With the bases loaded again in the top of the fifth inning, Trey Fenderson lined a three-run double down the left field line to put Putt up 22-1.
Mason Ligenza drove a pinch-hit RBI double to right center on the first pitch he saw in the top of the sixth. Freddy Beruvides Jr. struck out two in his 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth inning as the Panthers went on to beat No. 12 West Virginia 23-1 in seven innings.

The Panthers will host the No. 10 ranked Virginia Cavaliers this weekend at Charles L. Cost Field. Friday's series opener is slated for a 6 PM first pitch.
