PITTSBURGH – The Pitt Panthers (29-21) topped Penn State (15-33), 11-7, on Tuesday night at Charles L. Cost Field.
The Panthers' ten runs over the first three innings is all they needed to take down their in-state rival.
Pitt has now won each of their last four games against the Penn State, outscoring them 42-10 during that stretch.
Lorenzo Carrier led all players with his four-hit performance on Tuesday, hitting two doubles, two singles and scoring three runs. Carrier has combined for seven hits in Pitt's last two games. On the year, he is now batting .398 with 68 hits and 13 doubles.
Trey Fenderson drove in a pair of runs on a pair of singles, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and walk. First baseman Carter Dierdorf worked three walks and drove in three runs on a bases-clearing double in the second inning. True freshman Mason Ligenza hit his fourth home run of the year and drove in a pair of runs. Ligenza now has seven hits this season, four of which are home runs. Designated hitter Sebastian Pisacreta drove in three runs and worked a walk in the win.
Right-hander David Leslie came out of the bullpen and shut the door on Penn State with two scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth innings. Michael Savarese gave the Panthers a quality start in a predetermined bullpen-day for the pitching staff. Savarese allowed just one run on three hits over the first two innings of the ballgame. Eddie Smink gave Pitt a must-needed shutdown inning with a scoreless seventh.
The Panthers jumped on the Nittany Lions early with a four-run bottom of the first inning. Caden Dulin worked a walk and moved up to third on Lorenzo Carrier's double to center. Back-to-back RBI singles from Kai Wagner and Trey Fenderson added Pitt's first two runs of the ballgame. Sebastian Pisacreta added two more runs on a single to left as Pitt led 4-0 through one.
Penn State scored a run in the top of the second inning but the Panthers responded with four more runs in the bottom half of the inning to extend their lead to seven. Pitt's top of the order strung together a handful of hits to load the bases for Carter Dierdorf who shot a three-run double down the left field line. Mason Ligenza then worked a bases-loaded walk to put the Panthers up 8-1 in the second.
For the second consecutive inning, the Panthers answered with runs after the Nittany Lions scored in the top half of the inning.
Lorenzo Carrier started the inning with a single to short for his third hit of the game. He moved into scoring position after Kai Wagner worked a walk and would score on Trey Fenderson's RBI single to left field in the following at-bat. After Carter Dierdorf walked to load the bases, Sebastian Pisacacreta drove in Wagner on a sacrifice fly that was hit in foul territory. Pitt led 10-2 after three innings.
Penn State would plate five runs over the next two innings but the Panthers still led through five, 10-7.
Mason Ligenza added to Pitt's lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
David Leslie struck out four over two shutout innings to finish Tuesday's contest as the Panthers went on to beat the Nittany Lions, 11-7.
