Jason Earle joined the University of Pittsburgh Department of Athletics in July of 2020 as a coordinator of broadcast and video production. Earle serves as a play-by-play announcer, producer, and control room operator for ACC Network broadcasts.
Earle and the Pitt Studios staff produce Pitt sporting events that air on ACC Network and ACC Network Extra as well as the ESPN App. Pitt Studios is responsible for the live productions of home games for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball, wrestling, and gymnastics. In preparation for these events, Earle spends time researching teams, interviewing coaches, organizing video, and building graphics.
Earle oversees live content on Pitt’s ACC Network Extra digital broadcasts and serves as a play-by-play announcer and producer on those productions. In the winter of 2021, Earle started producing live linear broadcasts that air nationally on the ACC Network. Events for both production platforms consist of an ESPN-branded graphics package, replay, announcers, and a crew of 25-30 event workers. Earle also manages a group of over 100 part-time and student event workers and staffs every home event with production personnel. He also oversees the development of ACC Network production and operations interns during the academic year, along with numerous young professionals and volunteer student workers.
A 2020 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication and English Writing, Earle began his time with Pitt’s athletic department as a production intern in the Broadcast and Video department in 2017. Earle continued to freelance on Pitt broadcasts as a production assistant, graphics operator and producer. Later that year, Earle began his time as a play-by-play announcer for Pitt’s ESPN-branded productions. Before becoming a full-time member of the staff, Earle worked as an intern at CBS News in New York City and WTOV News 9 in Steubenville, Ohio.
As a student at Pitt, Earle spent four years on the sports staff of 92.1 WPTS-FM – the University’s student radio station. During his time at WPTS, Earle broadcasted Pitt games as a play-by-play and color announcer, including two men’s basketball ACC Tournaments, two Pitt-Penn State football matchups, and Pitt football’s upset win over Miami in 2017. He also hosted numerous talk shows and podcasts, and produced content used on a variety of sports programming. Earle became sports director of the station during his junior year, managing the staff of over 40 students.
Earle grew up in Pittsburgh and attended North Allegheny High School. He now resides in Oakland.
Beyond the Bio
Favorite place on the University of Pittsburgh campus?
The Oakland Zoo. I grew up marveling at the best student section in the country, and it was a thrill to experience it during my time at Pitt. The energy level during a big game is unmatched.
What is one thing everyone should do when they visit the city of Pittsburgh?
PNC Park is one of the best ballparks in the country. The city skyline with the Clemente Bridge and the Allegheny River behind the outfield wall makes for a really unique setting, and an enjoyable place to see a ballgame.
Favorite sports moment at Pitt?
The 2008 Men’s Basketball Big East Tournament Championship run was really fun to watch. Pitt was playing at such a high level going into the NCAA Tournament, and it was so cool to see one of the best teams in program history become a true national contender.
Favorite Pittsburgh restaurant?
I love Italian food, so Girasole in Shadyside has always been one of my go-to spots.
