PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Los Angeles Athletic Club announced University of Pittsburgh's Vonteego Cummings will be one of 25 candidates for the 1999 John R. Wooden All-American Team and Player of the Year Award. Candidates were selected by the Awards Committee based on last year's individual performances and team records.
"I think this is a well deserved honor for Vonteego," said Panther Head Coach Ralph Willard. "He is certainly one of the most complete players in college basketball. He has had three outstanding years at Pittsburgh and this season should be no different."
Cummings, a 6-5 guard, averaged 19.5 points and 5.9 assists per game last season with 66 steals. Also, he set a Big East record by averaging 40.1 minutes per game and was the only player in the league to rank among the top three in scoring (third), assists (second) and steals (second). The Thomson, Ga., native enters his final season ranked 17th on Pittsburgh's all-time scoring list (1,162 points), seventh in assists (346) and fifth in steals (166).
