Swimming And Diving Squads Down Syracuse

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted Syracuse in a Big East Conference dual meet and defeated the Orangemen, today at Trees Pool. The men won with a score of 153-87, while the women claimed a 148-95 victory. It was the Panthers second victory of the weekend.
Freshman Mike Grube (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) continued to succeed in the freestyle events by claiming his third and fourth victories of the weekend. Grube led teammates Miah Heath (Estes, Park, Colo./Estes Park) and Michael Demos (McKeesport, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) in sweeping the top three places of the 50-yard free with a time of 21.16. He also placed first in the 100 free in 46.27.
Senior co-captain Brian Elko (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) won the 200 individual medley in a time of 1:54.95, narrowly beating Syracuse's Dustin Riley, who finished in 1:54.99. Fellow senior co-captain Michael Pron (Belle Meade, N.J./Hillsborough) claimed his first victory of the season in the 200 breaststroke (2:05.60).
Freshman Emily Colley (Pace, Fla./Pace) led the women in the distance freestyle events. She finished first in both the 500 and 1000 free with times of 5:01.10 and 10:14.24, respectively. Senior Liz Perry (Beaufort, S.C./Ft. Lauderdale) won the 200 butterfly (2:07.70), while fellow senior Beth Grube (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) placed first in the 200 backstroke (2:04.65).
In diving, sophomores Michael Wells (Downington, Pa./Downington) and Blair Beal (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) won the one-meter (187.40) and three-meter (193.45) boards, respectively. Senior co-captain Jamie Tomazich (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) scored a 188.15 on the one-meter and a 207.00 on the three-meter to sweep both boards for the women.
Both the men's and women's teams are 2-0 on the season (1-0 Big East) and will travel to Virginia on Friday, Nov. 5.
