
Panthers Roll Past Youngstown State, 67-51

PITTSBURGH - After leading by three points at halftime, the Pittsburgh women's basketball team used a second-half surge to take a 67-51 win over visiting Youngstown State tonight at Fitzgerald Field House.
The Panthers held a 29-26 advantage at intermission and went on a 10-0 surge, including two 3-pointers, through the first four minutes of the second half to widen their lead to 39-26. Youngstown State cut its deficit to 39-32 minutes later. But Pittsburgh came back with a 12-4 run sparked by Monique Toney's (Yorba Linda, Calif./Cerritos Valley Christian) two 3-pointers and Mandy Wittenmyer's (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) five points to take a 51-36 edge with 6:51 remaining. The Penguins pulled within 51-40, but could draw no closer.
Pittsburgh held as much as an eight-point lead (23-15) in the first half at the 4:49 mark. The Penguins, however, used an 11-3 run down stretch to provide the 29-26 halftime score.
The Panthers placed three players in double-figures, including Toney who had a game-high 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Wittenmyer also had a stellar performance with her 13 points and nine rebounds. Freshman guard Brooke Stewart (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) contributed 10 points of her own, while senior Nickeia Morris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Western Hills) had 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Laine Selwyn (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs) added another six points to go along with a career-high seven assists.
Pittsburgh's record improves to 6-2 overall (0-1 Big East). It returns to action when it plays at sixth-ranked Penn State Tuesday, Dec. 21.
