Women's Hoops Captures 70-60 Win Over Campbell

ATLANTA - With a 70-60 win over Campbell University tonight at O'Keefe Gymnasium in the Georgia Tech/Atlanta Marriott Northwest Holiday Classic, the Pittsburgh women's basketball team advanced to the championship game of the tournament. The Panthers improved to 7-3 on the season with the win and will face the host Yellow Jackets at 4 p.m. tomorrow.
The Panthers held as much as a 22-point lead midway in the second half and held Campbell to just three field goals in the final 13:42 of the game to go on to the win.
With the score 43-31 at the 13:12 mark, Pittsburgh went on a 12-4 surge over the next six minutes to go ahead, 55-35. Campbell rebounded with an 8-3 run to cut its deficit to 16 (63-47) and capitalized on four Pittsburgh fouls,h making all eight attempts down the stretch, to bring the final margin to 10 points.
Pittsburgh opened the game on a 7-0 run just over two minutes into the contest that ended with freshman Mandy Wittenmyer's (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) first basket of the game at 17:55. After five points from Campbell's Carrie Emory, Wittenmyer sank three more field goals to bring the score to 13-9 at 10:32. The Fighting Camels managed to tie the score at 13 apiece moments later. But Pittsburgh came back with seven-straight points to go ahead, 20-13. Campbell could come no closer in the first half and Pittsburgh went into intermission with a 33-19 lead.
The Panthers recorded their best overall field goal percentage of the season. They shot 53.8 percent (28-52) overall, while limiting Campbell to just 27.9 percent (17-of-61). Pittsburgh held a significant rebound advantage, grabbing 41 boards compared to Campbell's 30.
Wittenmyer led all scorers with 14 points (6-of-8), while adding a team-high six rebounds to go along with three assists. Fellow freshman Dallas Williams (Mason, Ohio/Mason) had nine points and senior Nickeia Morris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Western Hills) had eight and a game-high five blocks.
