PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Panthers women's softball team opened Big East Conference play this past weekend in a double-header with Notre Dame and dropped 6-1 and 10-2 losses to the Irish.
Notre Dame took an early 3-0 lead after three innings. The Panthers got on the board in the top of the fifth after redshirt freshman catcher Jackie Haar (Naples, Fla./Lely) doubled and then scored off freshman Clare McCann's (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) RBI-single. The Irish added three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to provide the final margin.
In the nightcap, the Panthers opened the scoring in the first when freshman Amy Steich (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville Area) scored off Katie Mitchell's (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) RBI-double to left-center field to take a 1-0 lead. The Irish took a 2-1 lead with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Steich added an RBI-single to center field to score fellow freshman Rhianna Rogers (Camarillo, Calif./Rio Mesa) to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the third. Notre Dame took the lead once again in the bottom half of the inning off Kris McCleary's home run to left field. The Irish went on to add six runs to take a 9-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth and added one in the sixth for their 10-2 victory.
The Panthers record falls to 9-17-1 overall and 0-2 in the Big East.
Pittsburgh returns to action Monday, April 5 when they host Wright State in a double-header at Frick Field. The game marks the Panthers' home-opener and the start time is set for 2 p.m.
