PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh women's soccer team (2-6, 0-2 Big East) continued their travels last week with two Big East Conference losses.
The Panthers visited Rutgers on Sept. 24 for their first Big East Mid-Atlantic Division matchup of the season and fell to the Scarlet Knights, 5-4, in overtime.
Both teams exchanged goals in the first half with Rutgers' Uchenna Bright scoring just over seven minutes into the contest. Pittsburgh responded three minutes later when sophomore forward Cande Ruiz (Oxnard, Calif./Santa Clara) netted her first goal of the season at 10:52. Scarlet Knight goalkeeper Angel Hardaway lost control of the ball as she fell to the ground, allowing the goal for a 1-1 tie.
Rutgers forward Jen Tobin scored back-to-back goals within four minutes of the start of the second half to take the Scarlet Knights ahead, 3-1. Pittsburgh responded with three unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead with less than 12 minutes remaining in regulation. Senior midfielder Megan Beasley (Longmont, Colo./Longmont) took a feed from freshman forward Kirstin Gellatly (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) for her first goal of the season at the 59:21 mark. Senior forward Mia Mora (Chula Vista, Calif./Hilltop) scored her second of the year unassisted at 73:20, before Gellatly netted one of her own, her fifth this season at 78:41.
Keri Lages tied it up for Rutgers, 4-4, with just over five minutes remaining to force overtime. Then, six minutes into the first overtime period, freshman Jamie Jandasek scored the game-winner off a corner kick from Tiphanie Forst to clinch the 5-4 victory.
The Panthers converted four goals out of just eight shots. Junior goalkeeper Nicole Bashor (Harriburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) recorded five saves on the night.
Pittsburgh then traveled to Villanova (8-2/2-0 Big East) on Sept. 26, and fell to the Wildcats, 2-0. Villanova's Kristin Dunst scored at the 22:56 mark, while Lauren Sellers added another goal in the 73rd minute.
The Panthers were led by Gellatly, who recorded four shots on goal. Gellatly has made quite an impact as a freshman starter. She leads the team in goals (five), points (10) and shots (24).
Bashor and Jen Huzvar (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) both spent time in goal for Pittsburgh. Bashor had four saves, while Huzvar recorded one. The Wildcats' Janel Schillig made eight saves on 13 Panther shots, including six in the second half.
Pittsburgh wraps up its travel schedule at West Virginia on Wednesday, Sept. 29. The Panthers kick off a month-long homestand when they host Central Florida (1 p.m.) on Oct. 1, and Georgetown (1 p.m.) on Oct. 3.
