PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh women's soccer team fell to Navy today, 2-1, in the Panthers' home opener at Morton Field in Upper St. Clair.
The Midshipmen got on the board first when Kristen Riismandel fed a pass to fellow midfielder Michelle Nance, who put the ball in the far left side of the goal. The time of the score was 12:02.
Five minutes later, the Panthers retaliated with a goal of their own. Freshman forward Kirstin Gellatly (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) recorded her first career goal when she took a pass from sophomore midfielder Andrea Graybill (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) past Navy's goalkeeper, Sarah Wilson, who was rushing out of the box.
The Mids scored one more time before the half on a goal by Justine Fisher at the 40:57 mark. The assist was credited to Melissa Rains.
Pittsburgh out-shot Navy, 20-13, but could not capitalize in the second half. Graybill led the team with five shots, while freshman forward Jacqueline Fix (Monaca, Pa./Center) had two great scoring chances. A line-drive shot in the first half hit the crossbar, and a second half opportunity fell short when Fix was tripped up in front of the goal with no foul called. The Panthers also had seven corner kicks on the afternoon, to Navy's two.
Wilson received the win for the Midshipmen and recorded five saves on the day. Pittsburgh goalkeeper Nicole Bashor (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) was credited with two saves.
The Panthers move to 1-1 overall. Pittsburgh returns to action Sept. 10-12, when the Panthers compete in the Fila Invitational hosted by Maryland. Pittsburgh will face Pennsylvania and Baylor in the tournament.
