PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh women's soccer team hosted Providence in a Big East Conference intra-divisional matchup today, tying the Friars, 1-1, in double overtime at the Morton Sports Complex.
The first half remained scoreless though both teams had scoring opportunities. Providence scored first at the 61:49 mark when Caitlyn Welsh took a pass from Melissa Crowley and shot it from the far right side and out of the reach of Panther keeper Rachel Brown (Burnley, England/St. Christopher's). Kyle McAuley was also credited with an assist on the play.
Pittsburgh was able to tie up the game at the 76:03 mark after forward Cande Ruiz (Oxnard, Calif./Santa Clara) was taken down inside the box by a Friar defender. Sophomore midfielder Lauren Sciocchetti (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) then scored her first career goal by converting the ensuing penalty kick that would eventually force overtime.
The Panthers led the shot count 25-19, including a narrow 6-5 advantage in overtime. Ruiz had a team-leading five shots on goal, while Welsh and McAuley led Providence with five apiece.
Friar keeper Caroline Haines had a solid game in goal and was called upon to make 10 saves on the afternoon. Brown guarded the net for the Panthers for 70:19 and made five saves before she was replaced by sophomore Gretchen Ross (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler Area), who made three saves.
Pittsburgh will travel to Syracuse on Friday, Oct. 20, before returning home for its last game of the season as the Panthers host Duquesne on Sunday, Oct. 22.
