PITTSBURGH - Mandy Wittenmyer (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) recorded career-highs in points and rebounds, but it wasn't enough for the Pittsburgh women's basketball team as the Panthers fell to host Duquesne, 67-59, tonight at A.J. Palumbo Center.
Duquesne led 40-29 at the half, but Pittsburgh went on a 19-7 run to start the second stanza and took a one-point lead on a Jackie Campbell (Munroe Falls, Ohio/Stow Munroe) basket, 48-47, at 11:30. During the span, sophomore Laine Selwyn (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs) sank two 3-pointers and fellow sophomore Brooke Stewart (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) scored one.
A fastbreak layup by Duquesne's Tionda Jennings put the Dukes back up by one at 9:45 before two baskets by Wittenmyer gave the Panthers a three-point advantage, 52-49, at 7:56. Duquesne then regained the lead (53-52) on a shot by Khalihah Este-Shehu at 5:49, but Wittenmyer tied the game at 55-55 at the 3:56 mark. However, a basket by Shiri Sharon of Duquesne at 3:25 put the Dukes up for good as they held on for the win. Duquesne converted eight free throws in the last two minutes to provide for the final margin.
Pittsburgh held its only lead of the first half, 7-6, at the 16:53 mark. Duquesne held as much as an 11-point lead, 28-17, with over five minutes remaining. Senior guard Monique Toney (Yorba Linda, Calif./Cerritos Valley Christian) brought the Panthers within three (30-27) with a free throw at 3:20, but Pittsburgh would draw no closer in the first half and headed to the locker room trailing the Dukes, 40-29.
Wittenmyer recorded her third double-double in four games with a career-high 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting to tie as the game's leading scorer. She also grabbed a career-high (tied) 14 rebounds, another game high. Junior Bettina Love (Rochester, N.Y./Edison Tech) also scored in double-figures with 11 points.
Pittsburgh moves to 2-2 on the season. The Panthers travel to Ohio on Saturday, Dec. 2. Tip off is 7 p.m.
