CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Sophomore Lionel Armstead scored 14 of his 17 points in the second half to lead West Virginia past cold-shooting Pittsburgh 62-58 Thursday night.
Chris Moss added 11 points and Marcus Goree and Calvin Bowman each had 10 for West Virginia (13-8, 5-5 Big East).
Ricardo Greer had 13 points and 14 rebounds to lead Pittsburgh (10-10, 2-7), which lost for the fifth time in six road games this season.
Freshman Donatas Zavackas' 3-pointer gave Pittsburgh a 53-49 lead with eight minutes remaining but the Panthers went the next six minutes between field goals.
Armstead's 3-pointer that first bounced high off the rim gave West Virginia the lead for good, 57-54, with 5:09 remaining. Goree's inside basket between three defenders pushed the lead to five with 2:51 left.
Jeremy Holmes hit a driving layin with 1:42 left and Greer sank a free throw a second later to cut the deficit to 59-58. But Pittsburgh didn't score again.
The Mountaineers got two offensive rebounds in the final 1:05 to squeeze most of the remaining time off the clock. Pittsburgh was forced to foul and Armstead hit two free throws with 24 seconds left.
West Virginia's Kent Dennis rebounded a Zavackas 3-point attempt with 11 seconds left, was fouled and hit a free throw to finish the scoring.
The Panthers made 3-of-10 free throws over the final seven minutes and just 10-of-22 for the game. Pittsburgh shot 34 percent from the floor.
