
Women's Basketball Falls to Syracuse, 70-55

SYRACUSE, NY - Laine Selwyn scored a career-high 25 points but the Pittsburgh women's basketball team fell to host Syracuse, 70-55, in Big East Conference action Jan. 7 at Manley Field House.
Selwyn (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs) scored 19 of her 25 points in the second half and shot 9 of 11 from the field for the game, including 3 of 5 from 3-point range. She also went 4 of 6 from the free-throw line.
Sophomore Mandy Wittenmyer (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) put the Panthers on the board first at 18:54, but the Orangewomen jumped in front with a 6-5 advantage at 17:41. Pittsburgh held as much as a three-point lead in the first half, 9-6 at 13:08, but Syracuse regained the lead for good, 15-14 at 9:25. The Orangewomen were up by 10, 30-20 with 1:34 remaining before the Panthers closed within eight and entered halftime trailing Syracuse, 32-24.
Pittsburgh pulled within four, 34-30, at the 16:42 mark of the second half, but would draw no closer for the remainder of the game. The Orangewomen took their largest lead, 64-44 at 3:41. Selwyn scored 15 consecutive points for the Panthers from 12:10 to the 3:14 mark, but it wasn't enough for the Pittsburgh comeback.
Wittenmyer joined Selwyn in double-figures with 14 points and grabbed six rebounds. Freshman Sheila Stufflet (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson Senior) led the Panthers with seven boards while Selwyn also added a team-high four assists.
Pittsburgh moves to 7-7 overall and 1-2 in the Big East. The Panthers travel to conference foe Seton Hall on Wednesday, Jan. 10.
