Pittsburgh Women's Hoops Drops 58-57 Heartbreaker to Bucknell

PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team came up one point short of notching its first victory of the season, falling 58-57 to visiting Bucknell Tuesday night at Fitzgerald Field House.
The Panthers grabbed a one-point advantage with 3:06 remaining, 57-56, on a three-pointer from junior Brooke Stewart (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny).
However, Bison guard Desire Almind drilled a jumper with 1:14 left in the game, giving Bucknell what would eventually be the final score.
Pittsburgh had two opportunities to take the lead in the final minute, but two missed free throws and a misfired jumper by junior Laine Selwyn (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs) with two seconds remaining sealed the outcome.
A nip-and-tuck contest throughout and tie score at the half (30-30), the largest lead by either team in the second half was a mere four points.
Selwyn paced the Panthers wtih 19 points on an impressive 8-of-10 shooting from the field. Selwyn also dished out a game-high nine assists.
Junior Mandy Wittenmyer (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) notched her second consecutive double-double, tallying 15 points and 15 rebounds. Junior Dallas Williams (Mason, Ohio/Mason) added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Junior Molly Creamer, defending Patriot League Player of the Year, registered a game-best 27 points, including five three-pointers, which tied the school's single-game mark for three's in one game.
Pittsburgh (0-2) is back in action on Saturday as it hosts American University at 2 p.m. in the Field House.
