WASHINGTON (AP) - Reserve Trez Kilpatrick scored 17 points to lead Georgetown to a 76-58 win against Big East rival Pittsburgh Tuesday night.
For the Hoyas (10-11, 3-9 Big East), who had lost their past six games by a combined 19 points, it was their easiest conference win of the season. The Panthers (11-10, 2-8) had their two-game win streak snapped.
Georgetown jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never trailed in the game. Pittsburgh closed to within 57-49 when Isaac Hawkins made a pair of free throws, but the Hoyas held off the Panthers down the stretch.
In a matchup that featured two of the bottom dwellers of the Big East, Georgetown received little contribution from their guard tandem of Kevin Braswell and Anthony Perry. Perry and Braswell. The team's leading scorers, finished with 10 points and 3 points respectively.
The Hoyas Ruben Boumtje Boumtje had a near flawless first half, making 6 of 6 field goals. His 13 first-half points were as many points as he had scored in the past two games combined. Boumtje Boumtje finished with 15 points.
Once again, the Hoyas contained Pittsburgh's leading scorer, Vonteego Cummings. Cummings, who averages 17.1 points per game, scored 10 points. He was held to four points when the teams met in Pittsburgh on Jan. 23.
Pittsburgh coach Ralph Willard said Monday he planned to resign after the season. The Panthers, which won their first six games with upsets against then No. 10 Xavier and then-No. 4 Kentucky, have struggled in the Big East. Their only two conference wins were against Boston College and Miami.
Off-court problems have also plagued Pittsburgh. Freshman reserve guard Fred Primus was arrested on Jan. 19 for stealing $2,200 worth of jewelry. Primus has been dismissed from the team. Junior guard Kelli Taylor missed six games beginning on Dec. 22 for what the school termed "personal reasons," but was reported as alcohol abuse. He has since returned to the team.
