3/11/2002
PITTSBURGH - University of Pittsburgh head women's soccer coach Roland Sturk has announced the signing of three walk-ons: forward Jennifer DeLaltoz, forward/midfielder Rachel Petersen, and defender Shannon Strayer, who will join the Panthers for the 2002 season.
A native of Amawalk, N.Y., DeLaltoz was the leading scorer in Miami-Dade County in 1998, an all-county first team selection in 1998, and received all-section honorable mention in 2000. She also was a member of the 2001 Long Island All-Star team and became the only youth player chosen as a starting forward/midfielder for the 2001 New York Magic team.
DeLaltoz contributed to the Florida state Olympic Development Program in 1997-99 and finished with the New York state ODP in 2000-01. The Somers High School graduate was a varsity member of the cross country and track teams from 1997-2001.
Petersen, a native of Johnstown, Pa., was a member of the District VI AA Soccer Championship team at Westmont Hilltop, which earned a spot in the 1999 state semifinals.
In 2000, Petersen was selected as a Gold Medalist to the Keystone State varsity soccer team where she lead the team in goals. She was also a member of the 2000 Laurel Highlands AIM Championship squad.
Strayer, a Pittsburgh native and Upper St. Clair graduate, was a four-year letterwinner and helped her team to a section title in each of her four seasons. The Panthers advanced to the 1998 state quarterfinals, the 1999 state semifinals, and three WPIAL championships in 1998, 1999, and 2001. Strayer finished her high school campaign with 16 goals and 25 assists and led Upper St. Clair to a 78-15-6 overall record.
She was dubbed the 1999 "Player to Watch" and received The Almanac all-section honorable mention the past two seasons. Strayer's 11 goals and 12 assists in 2001 earned her a spot as one of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette "Soccer All-Stars". Additionally, she served as a member of the state championship Beadling club soccer team, which advanced to the state semifinals.
The Panthers will kick off their seventh season on August 30 when they travel to Loretto, Pa., to take on the Red Flash of St. Francis.
