Women's Soccer Defeats Duquesne 2-0

Pittsburgh registered its first women?s soccer shutout of the season as it defeated Duquesne 2-0 Friday night at Founders Field. The victory improves Pittsburgh to 2-1-0 on the year while Duquesne falls to 0-3-0.
Pittsburgh grabbed the lead midway through the first half when Netta Agredano controlled a punt by goalkeeper Jamie Pelusi, beat a defender then sent a shot past Duquesne goalkeeper Kristin Scharphorn for a 1-0 Panther lead. Scored at the 21:12 mark, the goal turned out to be the game-winner.
The Panthers? second goal came in the second half when Cara Kappler launched a shot from 30 yards out on the left side of the field for her first career goal at the 49:23 mark. Kappler received a pass from Jennifer DeLaHoz near midfield, surged past a few defender and launched her shot.
Pittsburgh also had another opportunity to score at the 58:23 mark but Kim Sturk?s shot bounced off the goal post.
Goalkeeper Jamie Pelusi registered her first shutout of the season as she saved three Duquesne shots. The Panthers outshot Duquesne 12-9 and had six corner kicks to the Dukes? four.
?It was a tremendous physical effort on our part,? Pittsburgh head coach Roland Sturk said. ?It was a little bit ugly but you do what you have to do. We showed we can battle. It was a good performance for us.?

Pittsburgh is back in action when it hosts Lehigh Sunday at Founders Field. Game time is 1 p.m.
