Women's Soccer Falls Short to Villanova 3-1

PITTSBURGH- The women?s soccer team was defeated 3-1 by Villanova on Sunday. The loss changes the Panthers? record to 6-9-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the Big East. Villanova came into the game ranked sixth in the Mid-Atlanic region for the week of Oct. 19th.
The first half was scoreless for either team. Pittsburgh?s best opportunity came in the 28th minute of play when Kristina Francois took a corner kick. Corina Sebesta?s head connected with the kick to redirect the ball to the close post of the goal. Villanova?s defense headed the ball out of danger. On the next play the ball was forced out to the top of the penalty box to the feet of Sebesta. Sebesta took a shot and Villanova?s keeper Jillian Loyden knocked the ball clear of the goal.
Pittsburgh?s defense stayed strong during the first half of play with key contributions made by Katie Surma, Aimee Romasco, Toni Koram and Carli Brill. In goal, keeper Jamie Pelusi stood strong against Villanova?s twelve shots in the first half.
The first goal of the game was scored by Villanova?s Erica Stewart and assisted by Jamie Weist. The goal came in the first six minutes of play in the second half.
Less then five minutes later the second goal of the game was scored by Villanova?s Laura Johnson with the assist coming from Stewart. The shot came from outside the penalty box to the far corner of the goal.
Pittsburgh was able to answer one of Villanova?s goals in the 78th minute. Kristina Francois took a corner kick for the Panthers. The ball found the head of Sebesta who was able to put the ball past the Wildcats keeper.
The final goal of the game came in the 85th minute of play by Villanova?s Regina Villari.
Pittsburgh created scoring opportunities late in the game, but was unable to capitalize.
Pelusi made a total of eight saves in the game, increasing her career total save to 326, a new women?s soccer record.
The Panthers will play their last game of the regular season on Wednesday Oct. 27th at 7p.m.against Georgetown at Founder's Field.
