Clemson Box Score
CLEMSON, S.C. ? A poor shooting night from the field doomed Pittsburgh?s women?s basketball team as it dropped a disappointing 51-38 decision to Clemson on Saturday. The loss was third in a row for the Panthers, who fell to 6-3 on year. The Lady Tigers improved to 4-4.
The night started off slow as Pittsburgh fell behind 12-4 at the 13:03 mark of the first half. After Clemson upped the score to 11 points (19-8) thanks to numerous turnovers and missed shots by the Panthers, Pittsburgh overcame its poor start and got back into the game.
An 11-2 run over the next four minutes pulled the Panthers to within two points, 21-19, on two free throws by junior Cheron Taylor (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King). The spurt was short-lived though as Clemson scored nine of half?s final 11 points to take a 30-21 halftime advantage.
In the first half, Pittsburgh missed all six of its 3-point attempts and shot just 24 percent (8 of 34) overall from the field. The Lady Tigers didn?t fair much better, hitting 32 percent (12 of 37) of its field goals.
In an ugly second half, Pittsburgh scored 17 total points and shot 18 percent (7 of 40) from the field. However, even though they were unable to hit their shots, the Panthers closed to within four points, 40-36, with 8:10 remaining in the game. Pittsburgh?s defense was the key to the comeback as it held Clemson scoreless for over seven minutes.
Four points was all the closer the Panthers would get as sophomore Jennifer Brown?s (Brooklyn, N.Y./Martin Luther King) jumper with 6:50 to go in the game would end up being the last points for Pittsburgh. Clemson scored seven unanswered points to end the game and win their third straight contest.
Pittsburgh finished the game 15 of 74 (20 percent) from the field and 2 of 18 (11 percent) from behind the arc. Clemson was 31 percent (20 of 65) shooting from the field and 27 percent (6 of 22) from 3-point range.
Freshman Marcedes Walker (Philadelphia, Pa./University City) posted four career double-double as she finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Taylor nearly tallied a double-double, pulling down a career-high 17 rebounds and added nine points.
Amanda White led Clemson with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Pittsburgh is off until it hits the road on Dec. 28 as it travels to St. Francis (N.Y.) It then continues its New York City tour with a Dec. 30 contest against Fordham.
NOTES: Pittsburgh was outrebounded 54-53, marking only the second time this year it has done so?the Panthers had 18 turnovers while Clemson finished with 21?the 38 Pittsburgh points were the lowest since it lost to West Virginia, 56-36, on Jan. 31, 2004.
