Women's Soccer Adds Six Student-Athletes for 2004

PITTSBURGH- University of Pittsburgh head women?s soccer coach Sue-Moy Chin announced the signing of five student-athletes to a National Letter-of-Intent and one recruited walk-on Wednesday. The six student-athletes will be on campus in the fall and are eligible for the 2004 season. The group marks Chin?s first recruiting class at Pittsburgh.
?This is my first recruiting class and I?m really excited about the players we have coming in,? Chin said. ?With this class, we have added speed, strength, and depth to our program. We have definitely brought in more of an attacking group this year and it will be exciting to see them blend in with the rest of the team.?
Pittsburgh?s six players include:
Stephanie Davis (Olney, Md./Sherwood H.S.)
A native of Olney, Md., Davis led Sherwood High School in Sandy Spring, Md. to the 2003 Division IV East Championships. Davis was also a member of the Maryland State Olympic Development Program and the Maryland United club team. A defender, Davis was a National Honor Society member.
Janean Gardner (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West H.S.)
A graduate of Cherry Hill High School West High School, Gardner concluded her four-year varsity career with 17 goals and seven assists. Gardner was a two-time All-South Jersey selection, two-time first team all-conference member, and played for the Medford Strikers club team. She helped lead the Strikers to the 2002-03 state championship.
Meta Haley (Pittsburgh, Pa./Quaker Valley H.S.)
Haley, a Pittsburgh native and Quaker Valley High School graduate, was a four-year letterwinner and helped guide her school to four section championships, including two WPIAL titles and the state finals. A three-time All-WPIAL and 2003 All-State selection, Haley finished her career at Quaker Valley with 111 goals and 86 assists. She played for the Pittsburgh Strikers and Century United Flash club teams. Holey also excels in the classroom as a National Honor Society member, National Merit Scholar and was named a Regional Academic All-American in 2003.
Lucy Kirkland (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman H.S.)
A native of Bethesda, Md., Kirkland led Walt Whitman High School to a regional runner-up finish as both a forward and midfielder. Kirkland was a four-year letterwinner, scholar-athlete award winner and was a member of the Maryland Olympic Development program.
Kelley VanderMallie (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield H.S.)
A forward/midfielder, VanderMallie earned All-Greater Rochester honors and was a two-time all county player at Penfield High School (N.Y.). She led Penfield in scoring and was named her team?s most valuable offensive player as a senior. VanderMallie also played in the NYSW State Olympic Development Program and competed in club soccer with the Rochester Jr. Rhinos.
Rachel Vecchio (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson H.S.)
A midfielder/forward, Vecchio earned NSCAA/Adidas All-Region, Second Team All-State and Western Reserve Conference Player of the Year honors as a senior. During her four-year career, Vecchio compiled a 61-10-14 high school record and led Hudson H.S. to one state title (1999), two regional championships and three district titles as a four-year varsity letterwinner. Her teams won seven Ohio State Cup titles and won the national indoor championship in 2000.
Pittsburgh opens its season with a scrimmage against Marshall on August 21st. The Panthers begin regular season play at the Bowling Green State University Tournament August 27-29.
