INDIANOLA, Pa. - Pitt women's soccer tied South Florida after one overtime period 2-2 on Friday night at Founders Field. A traffic accident interfering with the arrival of the South Florida team postponed the game to a 9:05 p.m. start. The tie moves the Panthers to 1-3-2 in the Big East and 2-7-3 overall. South Florida moves to 0-3-3 in the Big East and 5-4-3 overall.
After a late start on a rainy night the Panthers fell behind the Bulls 1-0 in the 29th minute of the game. Jessica Zabel had the goal for the Bulls after she stole the ball and found the back of the net on her shot. The Bulls increased their lead to 2-0 at the 38 minute mark when Erica Lewis scored a goal off a corner kick. Katie Reed had the assist on the goal.
The late game start left a five minute halftime for the Panthers to regroup. Five minutes proved to be enough for head coach Sue-Moy Chin to challenge her team and fire them up for the second half.
Pitt came out in the second half clawing for every inch and batting to win every 50-50 ball. Pitt out shot South Florida 13-6 in the second half and 24-14 on the night.
In the 55th minute of the game South Florida committed a foul and Carli Brill took the free kick. Brill's kick was lofted perfectly in front of the South Florida goal and Aimee Romasco connected with the ball, getting her head on it and redirecting it into the goal. Romasco moved the Panthers within one goal of the Bulls and scored her first career goal.
"I really challenged them at halftime," head coach Sue-Moy Chin said. "I challenged them to be better and to fight hard for the remaining 45 minutes. Aimee Romasco had a great game. She really wanted it, she fought hard and you could see her desire. She has great speed so she played outside midfield for us tonight to create some more attacking pressure. She had a great goal tonight"
In the 63rd minute of the game Jen DeLaHoz passed the ball to Meta Haley and began a dangerous attack. Meta dribbled the ball towards goal and made a nice move and beat a South Florida defender. The second defender tripped Haley inside the penalty box and the Panthers were awarded a penalty kick. Corina Sebesta took the penalty kick for the Panthers, scoring on the opportunity and tying the game 2-2.
The Panthers continued to threaten during the second half. DeLaHoz and Haley were able to string together passes going towards goal and Sebesta recorded nine shots on the night.
Romasco and Sebesta notched shots on goal early in the overtime period but neither shot found the back of the net. Pitt goalkeeper Jamie Pelusi denied the Bulls of the win, intercepting two corner kicks in the overtime period and recording four saves on the night.
Pitt plays at home again on Sunday, October 9th, when it hosts Marquette. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and will honor the seniors.
