Pitt Advances To Two Championship Games In Doubles

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.-The University of Pittsburgh women's tennis team played in two of three championship games before returning from the Matha Thorn Invitational held on the campus of West Virginia, this weekend. Participants in the tournament included: Bucknell, Loyola College, Southern Mississippi, Toledo, Villanova, West Virginia and Youngstown State. Due to inclement weather, only doubles action was played.
The team of Kristy Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) and Leah Friedman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) advanced to the championship game of the Flight A bracket, but fell to West Virginia, 8-3. Borza and Friedman defeated YSU (8-3) and Bucknell (9-7).
Anne Davies (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and Emily Hughes (Waynesburg, Pa./Canevin Catholic) combined for a win over Loyola College's pair (9-7), but dropped matches to Southern Mississippi (8-4) and West Virginia (8-6) in Flight B.
In Flight C, Carlie Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and Kimberley Harclerode (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) outlasted Toledo (8-1) and Bucknell (8-2) to play for the title against WVU, but dropped the match 8-1.
Pitt travels next to Newport News, Va. on Friday, Oct. 14th for the two-day Hampton Roads Tournament.
