Women's Tennis Opens Season With 5-2 Win

PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh women's tennis team opened its season on a positive note as it defeated Big East foe Cincinnati, 5-2, this afternoon at the Club 4 Life recreational center. Pitt has a 1-0 start on the year, while the Bearcats fall to 0-2 on the season.

Freshman Kristy Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) posted a 6-1, 6-2 score in No. 1 singles, while sophomore Leah Friedman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) recorded a 6-4, 6-3 win in No. 3 singles. Borza and Friedman also picked up a win in No. 1 doubles action with an 8-4 tally.

In No. 5 singles, sophomore Carlie Smith (Bel Air, Md./C Milton Wright) earned a 6-3, 6-2 win. Earlier in the day, Smith teamed with freshman Kim Harclerode (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and rallied an 8-5 comeback victory.

Freshman Chistie D'Achille (Gibsonia, Pa./North Allegheny) also rallied a comeback in No. 6 singles after being down a set. D'Achille won the second set and outlasted her opponent in the final set for the win, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5.

The team of senior co-captains Becky Emmers (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) and Emily Hughes (Waynesburg, Pa./Canevin Catholic) provided the sweep in doubles action with an 8-2 win over the Bearcats.
