BURLINGTON, Vt. - Head coach Agnus Berenato and the Pitt women's basketball team open the 2005-06 season on Friday night at the TD Banknorth Classic in Burlington, Vt.
The Panthers will take on William & Mary at 6 p.m., opening for the second consecutive year and 11th time overall in 32 years away from home. Host Vermont takes on Colgate in the other opening game on Friday night with the winners meeting Saturday for the championship and the losers meeting in the tournament consolation.
Pitt won both of its exhibition games, topping California (PA), 85-48, and the Ohio Girls Basketball Report Legends by a score of 77-60. Freshman Maddy Brown (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) led the Panthers with 37 points in the two games, while junior guard Mallorie Winn (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's/Georgia Tech) averaged 13.0 points, 7.5 assists, seven rebounds, three steals and 2.5 blocks per game.
The Panthers have played the Tribe on two prior occasions, splitting the games. Pitt won at Williamsburg on Dec. 30, 1990, by a 68-59 final, but William & Mary exacted revenge with a 77-72 win at the Fitzgerald Field House. The Panthers have never played Vermont or Colgate, their possible opponents on Saturday.
Both of the Panthers' games can be heard live through the internet at Yahoo! or by visiting www.pittsburghpanthers.com. Both contests can also be heard on Fox Sports Radio 970 AM by tape delay. Friday's game will air at 8 p.m. and Saturday's championship/consolation can be heard at 11 p.m. Greg Linnelli (play-by-play) and Jennifer Tuscano (color commentary) will handle the broadcasting duties.
