WOMEN'S TENNIS OPENS FALL ACTION IN CMU INVITATIONAL

PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh women's tennis team opened its fall campaign in the CMU Invitational, which was held at Robert Morris, with three titles and advanced to the championship round six times. Team scores we not kept for the four-team tournament that included the host Carnegie Mellon, Robert Morris and Duquesne.
Kristy Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) made her freshman debut wining the Flight 1 singles with a 3-0 record after defeating Johanna Bezjak of Duquesne (6-2, 6-1). Kimberly Harclerode (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) went 2-1 on the day winning the consolation bracket over Sheena David (6-4, 6-2).
Both Leah Friedman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) and Annie Davies (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) finished with 2-1 records in Flight 2. Friedman finished second and Davies placed third.
Emily Hughes (Waynesburg, Pa./Canevin Catholic) led Flight 3 with a perfect 3-0 after a win over teammate Carlie Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) (6-4, 6-1) in the championship game.
Jenna Suffoletto (Elma, N.Y./Iroquis Central), then, placed third in the fourth flight with a 2-1 record.
Borza and Friedman teamed up in doubles action to win the top-flight, 9-8 (9), over CMU's Amy Staloh and David. In the second flight Harclerode and Davies won the opening match, 8-2, before falling in the second game to Duquesne. Smith and Hughes rounded out doubles action with a second-place finish in the third flight.
The Panthers will be back in action when they travel to Bucknell for a two-day tournament starting on Saturday, September 17.
