Pitt Completes Day One Of Bucknell Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The University of Pittsburgh women's tennis team finished its first complete day of competition in the Bucknell Invitational. On Friday, majority of the scheduled matches were cancelled due to rain, make-up matches were played before the regularly-scheduled Saturday matches. Pitt recorded three undefeated individuals in singles matches and two undefeated doubles' teams on the day. The championships will be played today.
Kristy Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) finished the day undefeated in Flight A of the singles. She advanced in the first round with a 6-3 and 6-0 win over third-seeded Eunice Paravicini of Toledo. She then defeated Duquesne's Johanna Bezjack (6-4, 6-1) to move on against top-seed Candice Carlin of Villanova, today. Teammate Kimberly Harclerode (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) defeated Villanova's Leighann Reilly (6-3, 6-7(5), 10-8) and Yana Tikhonko (6-0, 6-3) of Marist to pick up two wins in singles action.
Annie Davies (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) opened action in Flight B for the Panthers with a win over a Loyola opponent (6-2, 6-0) before falling to the host, Bucknell in the next round. Leah Friedman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) went 1-1 in singles action with a first-round loss to Duquesne, but rebounded with a win over Meaghan Mckenna of Loyola (6-1, 6-1).
In Flight C, Carlie Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) picked up singles wins over Joanna Grossman of Bucknell (0-6, 6-2, 12-10) and Toledo's Viviana Rivero (6-4, 6-3). Emily Hughes (Waynesburg, Pa./Canevin Catholic) dropped a match to a player from Toledo, but sailed past an opponent from Loyola (6-4, 6-0) to pick up a win on the day. Jenna Suffoletto (Elma, N.Y./Iroquis Central) won her first match in Flight D over Alicia Paterson (6-2, 6-2), but fell to Bucknell's Tiffany Card (6-0, 3-6, 10-12).
Borza and Friedman fell to Bucknell in the opening doubles matches, but defeated Mount St. Mary's (8-1) in the consolation bracket. Also in Flight A action, Davies and Hughes moved past Villanova (8-4) and another team from Mount St. Mary's (8-1). Davies and Hughes look to face Toledo, later today.
Harclerode and Smith teamed together in Flight B and defeated Loyola's team of VanSlooten and Lynah (8-0) and is pitted against Vandermolen and Thompson of Toledo.
Play resumes today and will finish late tonight in Lewisburg.
