Sophomore Kristy Borza Earns Title

YOUNGSTOWN, OH--Sophomore Kristy Borza earned another title this past weekend, as Pitt's women's tennis team returned home from the Youngstown St. Invitational.

Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) earned Pitt's sole title with a 3-0 record in Flight A singles. Borza first knocked off Youngstown State's Allison Day, allowing her just one point in both sets (6-1, 6-1). Borza started slow in the second round against Martina Wodzinski of Temple. In her first set she fell 3-6, but rallied to a win after the second and third sets with scores of 6-2 and 10-5. In the title game she was victorious against Temple's Myriam Cueva (6-4, 6-2).

Also playing in Flight A, senior Annie Davies (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) fell to YSU's Gina Peretti (6-2, 6-0) in the opening round and finished seventh when she dropped a 6-3, 6-4 match to Jackie Hughes of Duquesne.

After not scoring a point in the first set, junior Carlie Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) earned a win in Flight B singles over Rachel McGowan of Duquesne, (0-6, 7-5, 6-2). Smith later fell to a Temple opponent 6-4, 6-4, and faced sophomore Christie D'achille (Gibsonia, Pa./North Allegheny) in the match for third place. D'Achille went on to win that match 6-1, 6-3.

Prior to that match D'Achille went 1-1 on the day. In her first action of the day, she started with a win in the first set (6-4) before she dropped the second set, 2-6. In the tiebreaker she pulled away and earned the win, 10-4, over a Duquesne opponent. Later, D'Achille dropped a match to a YSU opponent (6-2, 6-2).

Freshmen Anna Broverman (Asbury, W.Va.) and Anne Piccirillo (Spring City, Pa.) lost to Temple opponents in the first round of Flight C singles action. However, Broverman and Piccirillo ended up meeting in a match after defeating their second round opponents. Piccirillo finished fifth with a 7-5, 6-3 win.

In flight D singles, junior Michele Petrasko (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights) and freshman Sarah Macausland (Wyomissing, Pa.) dropped their opening matches. Macausland later defeated Duquesne's Renee Niklewicz (0-6, 6-4, 10-2) for fifth, while Petrasko placed seventh.

In doubles action, Davies and D'Achille paired to earn a win in Flight A, posting an 8-5 victory over a duo from YSU. Smith and Borza were also victorious with an 8-1 win over another pair from Youngstown St. Despite second round losses, both Pitt squads met later in the bracket, where Smith and Borza took home third-place honors with a 7-5 win.

Pitt took third and fifth in the second flight of doubles. Piccirillo and Petrasko won in the opening round (8-6), before dropping a match in the second round. Piccirillo and Petrasko picked up their second win of the day after defeating a squad from Temple.

Broverman and Macausland lost their first match of the day (2-8), but claimed fifth with an 8-6 win over Temple's duo of Smalley and Azoulay.

Pitt will take a week off of tournament action and will return to the court in the Martha Thorn Invitational on Oct. 6 in Morgantown, W.Va.
