PITTSBURGH--Held scoreless in game two, the Pitt softball team dropped a 6-0 contest this afternoon in it's doubleheader against Penn State at Trees Field. Pitt slipped to 16-29 on the season, while the Nittany Lions improved to 21-13.
Pitt was out-hit 9-4 in the game. As she did in the earlier contest, sophomore Alex Shoemaker (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) tallied the Panther's first hit of the game with a one-out shot to left field in the fourth.
Pitt's best chance to score was in the third inning after junior Valerie Mihalik (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) tallied a lead off single to left field. She later stole second and moved off a single from senior Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, Calif./Cordova). However she was thrown out at home when attempting to score on the same play.
Penn State got on the board in the first inning with two runs off four hits after they tallied four consecutive hits to open the game. The Nittany Lions scored another run in the second and then took a 4-0 lead in the fourth after hitting a home run. Later PSU tallied two two-out runs with bases loaded in the fifth inning.
Freshman Kayla Zinger (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope) pitched the first 3.1 innings, giving up four runs, while three were earned. Sophomore Kaitlyn Schuster (Ellwood City, Pa./Lincoln) pitched the final two innings of action, striking out two batters and allowing one hit.
Pitt travels to South Orange, N.J. for a conference doubleheader against Seton Hall on Saturday, April 21, at noon.
