INDIANOLA, Pa.—An early second half goal gave Connecticut a 2-1 win over the Pitt women’s soccer team on Friday night at Founders Field. Despite a strong showing in the first half, the Panthers were unable to carry their offensive pressure into the second period and fell short in the Big East contest.
The Panthers attacked the Connecticut defense from the game’s kickoff, as Katelyn Ruhe recorded the first shot on goal in the 8th minute.
Pitt jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Liz Carroll headed in a corner kick taken by Jennifer Kritch in the 10th minute. The goal was Carroll’s fourth of the season and tied her for the team’s scoring lead. Pitt failed to capitalize on two other corner kick opportunities created in the first half.
In the 30th minute, a goal by Connecticut’s Brittany Tegeler evened the score at 1-1. Elizabeth Eng took a shot that was stopped with a diving save by Pitt goalkeeper Morie Kephart. Tegeler recovered the loose ball and finished for her first goal of the game.
Play remained even during the rest of the period and the programs entered halftime tied at 1-1.
The Huskies scored the go-ahead goal early in the second half. Connecticut’s Tegeler tallied the game winner and her second goal of the night as she fired a shot from the left side of the field into the lower right corner. Courtney Wilkinson-Maitland assisted on the play.
Connecticut controlled the pace throughout the remainder of the game, outshooting Pitt 10-3 in the game’s second period.
“It was a game of two halves,” said Pitt Head Coach Sue-Moy Chin. “We dominated the first 30 minutes, but we didn’t show up in the second half. That was the first time we have been outworked.”
With the loss, Pitt slipped to 4-10-0 overall and 1-5-0 in conference play, while Connecticut improved its record to 4-7-3 and 2-2-2 in the Big East.
Pitt returns to Founders Field to host Big East rival Providence on Sunday. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
