PITTSBURGH—Freshman Jessica Rhodunda recorded her first career triple, as the University of Pittsburgh softball team earned a 2-1 decision over Villanova in the first game of its doubleheader this afternoon, at Trees Field.
Pitt ended the scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth, when Rhodunda smacked a two-out triple on the first pitch tossed to her. Rhodunda would score after junior Megan Livesey battled through several pitches before she tallied her second double of the year.
The Panthers looked to add more runs to the scoreboard as pinch hitter Keli Gaynor was walked. The Wildcats, then, intentionally walked sophomore Reba Tutt to load the bases, but got themselves out of a jam with a caught fly in centerfield.
In the sixth inning, Pitt added a run after sophomore Ashley Amistade recorded as hit as the first baseman came off the bag. Amistade’s groundball drove in Sara Falatico, who was pinch running for first baseman Ciera Damon.
The Panthers had an opportunity to strike first in the opening stanza, as the bases were juiced after Villanova intentionally walked senior Sam Card. However, the Panthers would strand all three batters.
Sophomore Cory Berliner recorded the win, allowing just one run in the seventh inning. Berliner leads the pitching corps with 103.1 innings pitched and a 1.83 ERA.
