Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania--The Pitt women's soccer team won their first game of the season, Saturday, defeating Cleveland State 1-0 in an exhibition game. The Panthers scored the only goal of the game from senior Liz Carroll and were helped by solid goaltending by senior Morie Kephart and junior Kristina Rioux who each played a half in net.
The lone goal came in the 16th minute when Carroll headed in a corner kick from senior Laura Berbert. Kephart and Rioux stopped all three Cleveland State shots including a brilliant diving stop by Kephart in the 29th minute to keep the Vikings off the board.
The Panthers outshot the Vikings 16-4. Cleveland State registered its first shot on a long drive in the 39th minute. Kephart was forced to dive to her left to stop a ball that was headed for the top right corner.
In the second half, both teams had scoring chances but neither could cash in.
The Panthers best scoring opportunity in the second half came midway through the period when the Panthers registered two quick shots but both were stopped by Cleveland State goalkeeper Kelly Zinkiewich. The Viking's goalie stopped eight of the nine Panther shots on net.
Kephart played the first half and stopped the only shot she faced while Rioux stopped two shots in the second half.
The game marked the only exhibition the Panthers will play this season. The team kicks off the regular season on Friday, August 20th at Founders Field against Buffalo.
