Morgantown, W.Va. — The Pitt women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision, Tuesday, at West Virginia. The Panthers record falls to 3-7-1 and 0-3-0 in the Big East.
The Mountaineers controlled most of the first half with a relentless attack and steady ball control. After 45 minutes, West Virginia outshot Pitt 12-3.
In the 16th minute, West Virginia's Meghan Lewis found an open Bry McCarthy on the left side of the box. McCarthy rifled the shot into the upper right corner of the goal to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead.
The Panthers best scoring opportunity in the half came when freshman Katelyn Lippert was able to control the ball at the top of the box, but her shot was blocked by a Mountaineers defender.
McCarthy's goal would mark the only tally of the first half.
In the second half, West Virginia continued on the offensive. The Mountaineers took a 2-0 lead in the 55th minute when Bri Rodriguez volleyed a ball that sailed over the outstretched arms of Pitt goalkeeper Morie Kephart.
Shortly after, the Panthers went on the counter-attack when senior Katheryn Kunugi fired a shot from 40 yards that sailed just over the crossbar. Minutes later, sophomore Hayley Neal controlled the ball at the top of the box but her shot went wide to the left.
In the 69th minute, Lippert again came close to putting the Panthers on the board, but her shot from the top of the box was stopped on a diving effort by West Virginia goalkeeper Kerri Butler.
West Virginia added to its lead in the 83rd minute when Blake Miller connected on a breakaway shot that deflected off the hands of a diving Kephart and into the goal.
The Mountaineers would shut down the Panthers the rest of the way to earn the victory.
West Virginia outshot Pitt 22-11, overall, including a 9-6 edge in shots-on-goal.
Kephart tied a season high with six saves and Lippert led the Panthers with five shots.
Pitt will continue its five game road trip, Friday, when the Panthers take on Louisville at 7 p.m.
