CHARLOTTE, N.C.—The Pitt women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision at Charlotte, Sunday. The Panthers record now stands at 2-4.
Sophomore Lyndsay Pierson scored the lone goal for the Panthers, her first on the season.
The Panthers outshot Charlotte 20-12, registering 10 shots in each half. However, it was the 49ers that scored the first two goals of the game, both coming late in the first half.
In the 37th minute, Charlotte got on the board first when Danielle Mayeaux scored on a header off a Jonna Handra corner kick. Less than five minutes later, the 49ers added to their lead when Handra connected on a strike from 30-yards into the corner of the net, giving Charlotte a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers came out strong in the second half, outshooting Charlotte 10-5.
In the 72nd minute, Pierson fired a shot that was stopped by Charlotte goalkeeper Natalie Lavigne, but she cashed in on the rebound. The goal was Pierson's second career tally and first since Sept. 20 of 2009 when she scored against St. Bonaventure.
Lavigne stopped six of seven Panther shots on goal while Pitt goalkeeper Morie Kephart tied a season high with five saves. Forward Ashley Cuba led the Panthers with six shots - three on net.
The Panthers return home, Friday, Sept.10 when they take on Akron at Founders Field. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
