PITTSBURGH - Providence scored all three of its goals in the second half on its way to a 3-0 win over visiting Pitt on Sunday.
It was the final away match of the season for the Panthers, who fall to 2-12-4 overall and 1-7-2 in the Big East. The Friars improve to 6-8-4 and 4-6-0.
Pitt's defense was outstanding in the first half, allowing just one shot. In the second half, however, Providence scored its three goals on eight shots.
Mary Vercollone got things going for the Friars with a goal just 39 seconds into the second half. The score, Vercollone's third of the season, was a header off an assist from Cynthia Warman.
Providence's second and third goals came just over 10 minutes apart late in the match. Taylor Bartini scored for the fourth time this season on a cross from Alexia Shea in the 75th minute. Laura Diclemente extended the lead to 3-0 with her seventh goal of the season, scoring on a penalty kick in the 85th minute.
Kristina Rioux and Nicole D'Agostino shared time in net for the Panthers. D'Agostino made two saves. Providence goalie Caitlin Walker made one save for the shutout.
Ali Matisse and Jackie Poucel each took one shot for Pitt.
The Panthers will wrap up their season Friday when they host rival West Virginia at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
