Pitt vs. Providence Game Notes
The Panthers picked up their 20th win the series with Providence this evening. Pitt trails in head-to-head meetings with PC, 27-20. Fifteen of Pitt’s 20 wins have been tallied on the Panthers home court.
The 60-57 victory marks the tightest victory margin for Pitt at the end of regulation. Pitt tied Marquette for its sole overtime appearance of the season on Jan. 29, 2011, but dropped the contest 74-70.
Pitt tied a season-low in assists with six. The last time the Panthers had six assists was on Dec. 7, 2010 vs. DePaul.
It is the second time this season that Pitt has tallied its fewest points (60) in a victory. The first time was against West Virginia on Feb. 5 when the Panthers toppled the then No. 14/15 Mountaineers, 60-53. Before that mark, the Panthers lowest point tally in a victory was on Jan. 27, 2009 versus Georgetown (50-39).
It is the first time sine Jan. 7, 2009 (at Providence, 0-of-11) that Pitt did not register at least one three-pointer in a contest. The Panthers went 0-of-5 on the night from behind the arc.
The Panthers made an 11-point comeback over the Friars. PC led 19-8 lead at the 11:56 mark of the first half. The rally ties the largest of the season which came in the last game against USF when Pitt trailed by 11 points at the 14:28 mark of the second half.
The Panthers improve to 12-3 this season when out-rebounding their foe on the boards. Pitt held the advantage 39-36 in rebounds over Providence.
Pitt has now won all but one of its contests this season (vs. Louisville on Jan. 9, 2011) when it leads the game with five minutes remaining in regulation. The Panthers held a 51-46 lead with a nickel’s worth of minutes left on the clock.
Senior Chelsea Cole recorded her BIG EAST leading 14th double-double performance with 13 points and 13 rebounds. She now has 24 double-doubles over her career.
It is the 17th time in 21 games that Cole has led the Panthers in rebounding in a single game.
Cole paced Pitt in steals, with four of its seven on the night. It marks a season-high for the senior, and ties her career high. The last time she nabbed four steals in a game was against Cincinnati on Feb. 21, 2009.
Senior Taneisha Harrison had 20 points, topping the team in the scoring column for the 13th time this season and the 27th in her career.
Harrison has recorded 20 or more points in four games this season and in back-to-back games for the first time.
Harrison added nine rebounds to her line score, a season-high for the senior and tying her career-mark set at Providence last season (Jan. 23, 2010).
Freshman Marquel Davis recorded the first two blocks of her collegiate career, setting a new career record.
It marks the 12th time this season that Pitt has limited its opponent to 30 or fewer points in the first half. The Panthers have won 10 of those contests, dropping only two (Rutgers, Marquette).
The last time the Panthers were limited to less than 30 points and pulled out a victory was against No. 14/15 West Virginia on Feb. 5, 2011; they entered the locker room at the half with 29 total points and won the contest 60-53.
For the second-straight game, Pitt posted a victory in a game in which they trailed at the half. The Panthers are now 2-11 on the season in games in which they are down at intermission.
