Women's Tennis Slips Against Rival

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. --The University of Pittsburgh's women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 road match to West Virginia today at Ridgeview Racquet Club. The Panthers slipped to 2-4 on the year and 0-2 in the Big East, while the Mountaineers improved to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the league.
The No. 1 doubles pair of senior Elizabeth Adams and freshman Gabrielle Catanzariti opened the contest with an impressive 9-7 win, their fourth victory of the season. Adams earned her 131st career victory with the triumph, five short of claiming second overall in Panther history.
The team, however, lost the doubles point after dropping matches in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
Later, in the No. 4 singles slot, freshman Kimmy Borza won her second consecutive match. She forced a tiebreaker after dropping the first set, 3-6. She posted a 6-2 win in the second set, and then outlasted her opponent in the decider with a 7-5 tally.
Sophomore Karma Parbhu also collected her second-straight win in dramatic fashion. After taking the lead in the match with a first-set win of 6-4, she fell 7-6 (3) in a nail-biting second set. Parbhu then prevailed in the third set with a 10-6 score.
Two other singles matches went into tiebreakers, but Pitt was unable to pull out the win. Adams forced a third set against Melis Tanik in No. 1, but lost 6-0 in the final set. Catanzariti also had a comeback, but dropped a heartbreaker with a 6-4 tally.
Pitt returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 20, when it hosts St. Bonaventure at 11 a.m.
