PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team is set to host the Michigan Wolverines on Thursday night at the Petersen Events Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
PACK THE PETE:
The University of Pittsburgh Athletic Department has once again teamed up with 100.7 Star and Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank for its 'Pack the Pete' Food Drive. Any fan that donates a nonperishable food item will receive free admission to the game and will also be signed up to win tickets to 100.7's O'Starry Night 2 concert on Dec. 9, at the Petersen Events Center featuring O.A.R., Train and Daughtry, among others.
CAREY GOES OFF VS. NIAGARA:
In her second game ever, freshman forward Stasha Carey put up 17 points and 16 rebounds in a 70-54 victory against Niagara on Monday. In her career debut, Carey was one point shy of a double-double (nine points, 11 rebounds), but notched her first double-double against Niagara in emphatic fashion.
Carey led the Panthers in every statistical category against Niagara including blocks (4), assists (3) and steals (2), along with points and rebounds. Through two games, Carey is off to a fantastic start as she is averaging 13 points and 13.5 rebounds per game. Her 13.5 rebounds rank fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
FRESHMEN STEPPING UP:
Carey is not the only impact freshman making contributions. Yacine Diop and Aysia Bugg are also playing big minutes for the Panthers. The three have combined to make up 48.7 percent of Pitt's total scoring and 46.7 percent of its total rebounding through two games. Both Bugg (11 points) and Diop (nine points) are coming off career-highs vs. Niagara.
WINNING ON THE GLASS:
The Panthers have out-rebounded each of their first two opponents and are +7.0 on the glass so far. All of last season, the Panthers had more rebounds than their opponents in just six games to rank last in the ACC in rebounding margin at -6.5. The Panthers had 54 boards against Niagara, which was the first time they pulled down more than 50 rebounds in a game since November 26 of last year against Mount St. Mary's. Carey leads the way with 13.5 per game, followed by Monica Wignot at 8.0 and Yacine Diop at 6.5 per game.
A FIRST FOR KIESEL:
It took 92 teams to along the way, but Niagara held Brianna Kiesel without a field goal for the first time in her career. Kiesel was 0-of-8 against the Purple Eagles, but found other ways to contribute to the victory. Kiesel had three rebounds, three assists and a steal in the win, and her relentless pressure defense helped force 19 Niagara turnovers. Kiesel is just six points shy of moving into ninth place on Pitt's career scoring list.
REMATCH:
Thursday's game against Michigan is a rematch from last year in Ann Arbor when the Wolverines narrowly edged the Panthers 83-75. Kiesel had 12 points and six assists in that contest.
